FAMILY
PROMISE
Nearly
every other month, we read in the bulletin or church newsletter that Baldwin
Community will host for Family Promise during the week.
What is
Family Promise? Family Promise is an
interfaith non-profit organization committed to helping homeless and low income
families nationwide achieve lasting independence. Families are provided shelter, meals and
support services. Our church is one
church within a network of churches who help.
Families are transported here by van.
We provide evening meals and hosting times in the evening. Our guests stay overnight in several rooms
here at the church. Each family in their
own room. In the morning, the guests are
driven back to the Crafton Day Center where adults work on job and housing
applications and are provided counseling.
Children go to school and younger children stay at the Day Center.
We believe
that God has led us to be an important part of Family Promise. We have many faithful and caring volunteers
here who provide this outreach ministry to people in need. However, many more volunteers are needed for
us to continue to be a host church during 2012.
We really need more volunteers to be meal hosts at supper time, evening
hosts and overnight hosts and drivers.
We are also looking for an overall coordinator for Family Promise at
Baldwin. “New” volunteers will be paired
with ongoing volunteers. You gift of
service will allow the guest families to continue to come to our church this
year. Without “new” volunteers, we may
not be able to continue this life-changing ministry at Baldwin.
Please
call Arleen Gealey (412-973-2711) if you need more information or if you would
like to volunteer in any way. Thank you.
LORD’S PANTRY
Our
families will be coming to our church on January 26 for food. Especially need this month are donations of
boxed dinners and tuna. Please place
your donations in the bins throughout the church. Thank you.
EIGHTH AVENUE PLACE
Eighth Avenue Place is a United Methodist Coffee House Ministry located at 811 West Street in nearby Homestead, PA. Pastor Keith Karefold explains that it is a ministry from the streets that “seeks to develop and shape individuals who in return re-develop and re-shape the Homestead and surrounding area(s).”
The Coffee House is open for morning hours Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. – 12 Noon. Weekly evening groups include Recovery Group, Bible Study and Prayer Meetings.
Monthly meetings include Men’s and Women’s Ministry nights. The weekend schedule includes two locations. “The Gathering” is held the first and third Saturdays of the month at the Homestead United Presbyterian Church at 908 Ann Street. This church hall is where the dinners are served followed by a Celebration Service at 5:00 p.m.
On the
second and fourth Saturdays of the month, the location is 811 West Street with
a Celebration Service at 5:00 p.m. All
Saturdays also include coffee hours from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
On the
last Monday morning of each month from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., members of
Baldwin Community UMC have been visiting Eighth Avenue Place. We sit and listen and talk with the people
who come in. Our lives have been
enriched by visiting together in a safe, Christian place. We welcome you to come and visit also. If you are interested, please call Christina
Coffey at 412-953-5989.
We
also need volunteers to prepare and serve a Christmas dinner at “The Gathering”
on December 17 from 2:00 p.m. -5:00 p.m.
A Celebration Service will follow the dinner. You are invited to stay if your time
allows. Please call Christina Coffey,
412-953-5989 to volunteer or if you need further information. This is an
important way we can serve the needy who live nearby.
LORD’S PANTRY
On
December 17, the families of the Lord’s Pantry will come to Baldwin Community
UMC for bags of food so that they will not go hungry towards the end of the
month. This month we are requesting
pineapple, soup and toothpaste. Please
place in bins throughout the Church.
This significant ministry is led by the Outreach Team Lord’s Pantry
Steward, Susan Eyrolles. Thank you,
congregation, for responding to the needs of people in our local communities.
Yoga Class
Monday and Wednesday 9:30 a.m. -10:30 a.m. in Asbury Hall.
Christ-Centered Yoga enhances our wellness and our connection with God. Through movement, music, and spiritual inspiration, Christian yoga gives us a new and powerful way to worship God with our bodies, minds, hearts, and souls. We are inspired by God's love for us as we connect with Him through a personal relationship. We allow Him to uplift us and fill us with energy and peace.
Class led by Melissa Bigley, Certified Yoga Instructor
All faiths, and all levels of fitness, are welcome.
Being quiet with God allows us to create enough
psychological and spiritual space that God can truly
create an inner sanctuary in us. Being quiet enough to
hear our Lord's voice is not optional-- it's essential for
growth. Let God bless your efforts to get closer to Him
and the joy-filled, healthy life He has planned for you!
